Conferences & Workshops

SERDP and ESTCP convene workshops of experts from academia, industry, and the military Services to examine the current state of the science and engineering on specific environmental problems. These workshops identify gaps in knowledge and technology and prioritize these gaps in light of DoD needs to determine where investments in RDT&E could have the greatest impact on DoD’s ability to address its environmental requirements. Results of these workshops guide investment decisions.

Throughout the year, SERDP and ESTCP also support and participate in various technical conferences that align with their mission and areas of emphasis.

ASETSDefense 2011: Focused Workshop on Cadmium Plating
August 30-31, 2011, Baltimore, Maryland

Cadmium (Cd) alternatives are moving toward production in different applications; however, many have technical issues associated with them. This SERDP- and ESTCP-sponsored workshop facilitated understanding of the issues and options, defined requirements for the different applications, and developed a plan for coordinating research, development, test and evaluation activities. The following topics were covered: (1) Cd replacement developments, available data, approvals and implementations, and the general advantages and limitations of each solution; (2) information needed by the decision makers for each application to accept or reject use of the alternatives that vendors are proposing; and (3) information and opportunities for coordination on development and testing programs under way in different DoD and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) organizations. Workshop on Investment Strategies to Optimize Research and Demonstration Impacts in Support of DoD Restoration Goals
June 16, 2011, Salt Lake City, Utah

DoD’s Installation Restoration Program has set goals to achieve Response Complete (RC) at 90 percent of sites at active installations and Formerly Used Defense Site properties by the end of FY 2018 and to achieve RC at 95 percent of these sites by the end of FY 2021. Despite substantial progress made in the past 20 years, significant challenges remain for remediation of chlorinated solvent-contaminated groundwater at some sites. Cleanup to unrestricted use is often desired, but technically difficult to achieve, and sustainable remediation has become an increasingly important goal. To address these challenges, SERDP and ESTCP hosted a workshop to review the current cleanup goals and management processes used by the different services, evaluate existing and potential future issues associated with site closure, and identify research and demonstration strategies that, if incorporated into cleanup strategies, could improve remediation approaches, reduce risk, and ultimately reduce the cost to complete. A review of the science, remediation technology, characterization and monitoring technology, and technology transfer needs identified is presented in the Workshop Summary Report.
